Ship Life

So I just started my classes and they all seem pretty cool. None of them are going to be super hard, it’s weird going to a different college actually. It’s funny cause half the kids here think the classes are like so much harder and half are like this is sooo easy! I fall in the middle. My favorite part about the voyage so far though is definitely the sun! We have had great weather the past couple days!!! I mean who would not love to do their homework lounging in a beach chair in 75 degree weather? Crazy right. I mean sometimes I look around and can’t believe that I’m here for school. Dinners are buffet style which could definitely be dangerous! But I am getting sick of the food already! Every day we have pasta and a form of potatoes, I swear! It’s actually kind of funny because before we go to eat we guess what kind they will have! The ship plans fun activities for us to do at night, there is not much in the middle of the ocean. Last night they played the dark night on the big screen in the union and then tonight was an open mic night! I am getting much more used to the motion of the ocean I hardly notice the swaying of the ship when I am sitting down. Sleeping is still kind of bad though. My room is pretty close to the engine so it gets really loud and then stops and then loud again. It sounds like you are taking of on a plane or like you are in a train or something. Oh and it vibrates kind of a lot. Anyways only 4 more days till Spain!!! Can’t wait I’ll be sure to upload some pictures then! Oh and if anyone wants to email me my address is bmhanson@semesteratsea.net I think, I have free emailing so I check it like all the time!

First Day

January 19, 2009
As I waited in line to get checked in (took about 2 hours) I looked around at all the people I would be living with for the next 4 months and all I could see was nonstop chatter. Just about everyone around me was outgoing kinda like me. I soon discovered that a lot of us were in the same boat, haha that's funny cause we are going to be sharing a boat and we felt the same. OK wow, anyway a lot of people decided to do this by themselves, this crazy, cool, scary, incredible, adventure that we decided to do independently. But if we were independent in that then we were all together. Kind of cheesy but it was very comforting to know. On this voyage there are about 523 girls and 196 guys on this sailing. I guess girls are more adventures.

After I was checked in I was assigned a cabin, cabin 4158 is my new home. My roommates name if McKenzie she is form San Diego and seems pretty chill. Our room itself isn't so bad I kinda like it, it's bigger than I thought it would be. We both fit all of our stuff in the room and had some extra space (for shopping) !!!! We are living in a triple which is the exact same size as a double except we have an extra bed coming out of the wall if we want to use it when we have more people in the room or anything like that which is pretty cool. On the first day we skipped unpacking an went shopping in the Bahamas and then lunch at a Greek restaurant. I've met some really cool people so far, our neighbors are all guys and they are all pretty cool. Two are brothers from Michigan Kind of quiet but nice.

We started orientation last night (Monday Jan 19) and it continued into today (20). It was SOOOOO boring! Like the worst 30 hours of my life. But oh well. We had a break between stuff and they were able to get the inauguration on CNN. They said it would only work if we all turned off our Internet so everyone did. Later that night we had our own little SAS inauguration ball. It was really fun they had deserts and champagne! Well tomorrow I have my first day of class! Wish me luck! I don't get into Spain until January 28, until then I am at SEA crossing the Pond.

Bahamas

January 16, 2009
The Bahamas were a lot of fun. I left the 16 for Nassau with my Mom and Matt. We stayed at the Riu on Paradise Island for the first two days which was an all inclusive, I mean it was no Mexico but it was definitely worth it. One of the nights we went and saw a comedy show which was so fun. But I'd have to say the coolest thing about the Bahamas was that I could gamble! HaHa I only pressed my luck in the slots cause I didn't know how to pay anything else but it was entertaining to say the least. I lost about 40 bucks but that's ok, it was about the experience. My mom on the other hand won 150 dollars in the ten cent slot machine with only 10 dollars! Lucky lady. The final night we were in Nassau we stayed at the Atlantis. That night I had my last meal on land for a while at Johnny Rockets! I had to get my last taste of good American food in before I go and eat all the crazy stuff in Vietnam and Africa!!! It was really nice to spend my last couple days with my mom and Matt. I wish my dad could have been there but he was off being the great business man that he is!

Packing!

January 15, 2009
So I started packing about a week before I left but as most of you know I waited until the night to do a lot of it! Let me tell you fitting 4 months worth of clothes, toiletries and shoes and all into 2 suitcases is quite a challenge! But I managed and they were both under 50 pounds, woo hoo!

Surprise!!!

January 14, 2009
So on Saturday night my amazing, incredible, awesome, ridiculous, fabulous, family surprised me with a little going away party! I was SHOCKED! I had no idea it was coming. My mom told me a week before that we were going out to a family dinner but she did not tell me where so I just assumed it would be one of my favorite restaurants since it was one of my last American meals. So imagine my surprise when we stroll into Barnabys! I was a little bit upset at first cause that was not my idea of the sort of last super I was anticipating. Imagine my surprise when I walk in and half the restaurant is filled with my family!!! Ahhh it was incredible. I was so moved that so many people showed up especially with the snow storm we had that day. It was a great way to say goodbye to everyone as I leave for my little adventure! So I just wanted to say thanks again to everyone who showed up and for all of you who are supporting me and don't think I'm crazy for wanting to live on a boat for 4 months!!!
Love and Miss you all
